This week I was exchanging e-mails with Paul Carlson from the Safety Solutions Academy and the Safety Solutions Academy Podcast and I suggested that we do a project together, be it a blog/podcast interview, <cough>co-host an episode</cough>, and/or attend a class for review. Paul suggested that we step it up a notch and do a class in North Carolina… Brilliant!
You see Paul is one of the few people who I seem to agree with on nearly every important topic and that doesn’t mean that we use the same guns or gear or that we have the home defense plans… Paul, like me, looks at an issue, thinks through it and selects the best solution for him, his family and his situation. That is perfect! And it is why I think Paul would be such a good teacher. (Actually, he was a teacher, and that probably doesn’t hurt either.)
As a Combat Focus Shooting Instructor and a charter member of the Association of Defensive Shooting Instructors, show Paul has the skills to demonstrate what he is teaching. His experience as an educator and the communication skills evident in his podcast, prove he has the ability to effectively teach the content. And his analyses of everything from preparation, awareness, avoidance, de-escalation, violence of action, handling the aftermath and gear show he has the ability to explain “Why” he teaches the skills and techniques in his course.
It is even evident in his motto…
Saving lives through Information, Education and Training.
I expect it to be a great class!
There is still one problem though… Which classes would you most like to attend?
I have heard a lot about Combat Focus Shooting and I know that Paul lives near and works frequently with Rob Pincus… Check!
I have never taken a specific unarmed combatives course and I think there should be at least 1 level of force available before going to the gun… Check!
I believe that shotguns are possibly the most versatile personal defense weapon and I would love the opportunity learn more about running one for home defense… Check!
I am a pistol shooter first and I like shooting pistols… Check!
I probably have more to learn about the use of a rifle than any other platform… Check!
