The History of When the Balloon Goes Up!

The term “the balloon goes up” has been used since the American Civil War when observation balloons were used to gather intelligence, exposing allied troops and triggering enemy fire. It’s use was reinforced in WWII due to the use of barrage balloons being lifted in preparation for air raids. Historically, the ascension of balloons has been a sign of impending incoming fire.

Today the term is used to describe the start of a critical incident that could range from an acute threat of physical injury at an ATM or Home Invasion to a systemic breakdown of society following a Katrina type natural disaster. As a law-abiding civilian or LEO, we do not get to pick when the balloon goes up, only how well prepared we are to respond to it.

The blog at started in October 2011, to help me develop my thoughts on the training, tactics and gear used by civilians to prepare for the likely challenges we will all face.

In August 2012, I decided to expand the mission of WTBGU! to include providing the best gear available for training, competition and preparing to survive the 1st 72 hours after a critical incident.

Today our mission is to “provide the best gear available for training, competition and preparing to survive the 1st 72 hours after a critical incident.”  We do this by selectively stocking only the best gear and providing access to that gear, with fast delivery, at a competitive price.

About Me

ron_wife_interviewI was born in Columbus, Ohio where my father was Columbus Police Officer.

I attended college at Ohio University where I triple majored in Marketing, Finance and International Business… finished 1 course shy of a degree in Economics… took the Advertising series in the Scripts School of Journalism… and graduated with my NASD Series 7 & 63, Ohio Life Health and Variable Annuity Licenses and eligible to sit for the Ohio Real Estate License.

After college I spent a year as a financial adviser and then 2 in managerial consulting with a ‘big 5′ firm before returning to school and earning my MBA from The Ohio State University’s Fisher College of Business with a double major in Operations/Logistics Management and Consulting.

While in School, I took a job with KTM North America, as the Director of Logistics and then after school I was a procurement consultant for 6.5 years before starting When the Balloon Goes Up!

Today, I use my background to run the When the Balloon Goes Up! store and analyze new products.

My interest in firearms started as a kid, but it was developed after my son was born.  When I realized that it was my responsibility to protect my family and that there were situations that I could not handle unarmed.

Since I believe that being an armed citizen is a great responsibly, I dedicated much of my time to learning about awareness, avoidance,  pistol handling and living as legally armed father… and then sharing it on the blog!

I have been happily married to my wife since August of 2000. We have one son, one daughter and two dogs. We live outside of Charlotte, NC. In my free time, I enjoy reading, listening to podcasts, and shooting IDPA.
